CHAPTER NINE

MATT unlocked the door and strode into the room, barely noticing his surroundings. He couldn’t believe that his plans were ruined already. So much for romancing the woman of his dreams this weekend. Right now, he didn’t know if she would stay or leave.

He was a realist and thought she would choose the latter. He’d lost his cool back there but if it was one thing he couldn’t stand, it was jealousy. He’d seen his father’s string of gold-diggers use it too many times to get what they wanted. Sure, his behaviour when Miranda had arrived hadn’t been anything to write home about, but why the interrogation?

Maybe she cares more than you think. The thought popped into his head, offering small comfort. Another thought closely followed. For a man who couldn’t harbour jealousy, the green-eyed monster had certainly stirred to life when he’d heard Steve Rockwell was Kara’s ex. And what had he done about it? He’d wanted to punch the offender right in the nose. So why was he judging her before giving her a chance? God, for a smart lawyer, he was stupid sometimes.

Eager to straighten things out, he wrenched open the door and barged out, almost colliding with Kara.

‘Can I come in?’ She spoke softly, uncertainty etched across her face.

Relief flooded him as he stepped aside, resisting the temptation to sweep her into his arms and carry her to the bed. ‘Sure. Let me take your bag.’

Her gaze darted around the room before coming to rest on the huge four-poster bed that dominated it. ‘This is lovely,’ she murmured.

He looked around as if seeing it for the first time, noticing the polished floorboards, the burgundy rugs and the matching quilt on the bed. He stared at the king-size bed and willed his mind not to fantasise. It didn’t work and he was hard within a second.

Turning his attention back to Kara didn’t help either. She was clad in tight camel trousers and a figure-hugging khaki jumper, her lips highlighted with gloss and her cat-like eyes focused on him, and the sight of her tempted him to fulfil every thought that had just flashed through his mind.

‘I’m sorry about before.’ The words tumbled out in a rush before he could think.

A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. ‘Matt Byrne apologising? That’s got to be a first.’

He shrugged, his confidence somewhat restored by the cheeky grin on her face. ‘I call it as I see it.’

‘Are you saying that you behaved abominably and that you’d really like me to stay?’ She batted her eyelashes like an experienced flirt.

‘Don’t push it, lady!’ he growled, striding across the room. He enveloped her in a hug, savouring the feel of her soft curves pressed against him. Her subtle floral perfume wrapped around him as he inhaled, allowing it to infuse his senses. The signature scent triggered memories of her eighteenth birthday, when he’d pushed her away. This weekend he wouldn’t be so foolish.

She wriggled in his arms. ‘So when
